Container: Collect one of the following:
One green cap mini-tip eSwab (acceptable source: nasopharynx or nasopharyngeal swab)
Respiratory Specimens (Aspirates): Nasal wash, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial washing, bronchial brushes, sputum, or pleural fluid in a sterile tube
Stability: Ambient: 3 Days / Refrigerated: 14 Days / Frozen: Unacceptable

ACL | BABES AB |
Babesia Microti Antibodies, IgG and IgM
Container: One gold gel 5.0 mL
Stability: Ambient: 48 Hours / Refrigerated: 2 Weeks / Frozen: 1 Year (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)
|
86753 x2 | ||||||
ACL | BABESIA |
Babesia Species by PCR
Container: One lavender (EDTA) 3.0 mL
Stability: Ambient: 24 Hours / Refrigerated: 1 Week / Frozen: 1 Month
|
87798 x2 | ||||||
ACL | BCTPCR |
Bacteria, Identification by 16S Ribosomal DNA Sequencing
Container: Tissue: Fresh (optimal) or paraffin embedded (see NOTE below)
Fluid: (non-blood) from normally sterile sites collected in Vacutainer tubes without preservative or Lavender top (EDTA) tube
NOTE: Regarding Paraffin Embedded Tissue: Formalin dramatically reduces the sensitivity of the assays due to reduced template yield and quality. Fresh tissue is the optimal specimen of choice, as it reduces the chance of introducing exogenous DNA templates or microorganisms during embedding/fixation.

ACL | BLC |
Bacterial Culture, Blood or Bone Marrow
Container: Blood: BacT/ALERT blood culture bottles (other blood culture bottle types are acceptable. However, these bottles will be processed manually and may lead to increased timed to initial detection of positive cultures.).
● Adult draws for patients greater than 12 years: Blood in aerobic and anaerobic bottles using aseptic blood culture collection techniques, total volume of 20 mL, 10 mL per bottle. If less than 20 mL of blood is drawn, the first 10 mL should be transferred to the aerobic bottle with the remaining volume (if any) transferred to the anaerobic bottle. Sensitivity will be decreased if less than 20 mL of blood is submitted.
● Pediatric draws for patients less than or equal to 12 years: Optimal volume for pediatric bottles is 4 mL. No minimum draw (sensitivity increases with larger volumes).
Bone marrow: Place in Aerobic BacT/ALERT bottle or other aerobic bottle
Acceptable Volume: Adult: 0.5 mL ; Pediatric: No minimum draw (sensitivity increases with larger volumes)
Stability: Ambient: 24 Hours / Refrigerated: Unacceptable
