Specimen Handling
Specimens should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible. If not, refrigerate at 2-8 ℃.
Unacceptable Conditions
· Unlabeled specimens.
· Quantity not sufficient (QNS).
· Clotted specimens.
· Whole blood, plasma, or specimens other than those specified above.
· Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimens.
· Specimens stored more than the stability period listed above.
· Specimens undergoing multiple freeze-thaw cycles.
· For accurate results, serum specimens should be free of fibrin, red blood cells, and other particulate matter. Serum specimens from patients receiving anticoagulant or thrombolytic therapy may contain fibrin due to incomplete clot formation.
· Specimens with obvious microbial contamination
· Quantity not sufficient (QNS).

Clinical Significance: For confirmation of pregnancy. Important in diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy and multiple gestation. Interference: This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). It is recommended to ask all patients who may be indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
