INPATIENT: BRING DIRECTLY TO LABORATORY , WITHOUT DELAY .
CENTRAL PROCESSING: CENTRIFUGE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER COLLECTION , AND DELIVER DIRECTLY TO THE OLYMPUS DEPARTMENT .
OUTPATIENT:
1) DRAW FASTING BLOOD SPECIMEN.
2) GIVE PATIENT LACTOSE SOLUTION.
3) DRAW SECOND BLOOD SPECIMEN 30 MINUTES AFTER PATIENT HAS FINISHED LACTOSE SOLUTION.
4) DRAW THIRD BLOOD SPECIMEN 1 HOUR AFTER PATIENT HAS FINISHED LACTOSE SOLUTION.
5) DRAW FOURTH BLOOD SPECIMEN 1 1/2 HOURS AFTER PATIENT HAS FINISHED LACTOSE SOLUTION.
6) DRAW FIFTH BLOOD SPECIMEN 2 HOURS AFTER PATIENT HAS FINISHED LACTOSE SOLUTION.
NO NEED TO CENTRIFUGE AND SEPARATE PLASMA - CAN BE LEFT WHOLE BLOOD; KEEP REFRIGERATED.

Lactose Tolerance scheduling: Physician office or patient: Call Sparrow Customer Service at 517-364-7800 to schedule appointment.
Lactose solution must be prepared 1 day ahead of draw date, so the date the patient is to have thetest performed must be determined.
Patient must go to the Sparrow Laboratory draw site in the Sparrow Professional Building to receive lactose solution and to be drawn for testing (unless already an inpatient at Sparrow Hospital).
Patient should be fasting 8 hours or more the day of the test.
Patient should drink lactose solution within 5 minutes.
Patient can not smoke, eat or chew gum. Small sips of water are allowable.
Patient must stay close to the lab, i.e. can not leave to run errands, etc.
