Additional Information
A fetal cell screen is performed on post-partum patients to identify those who may have experienced a large fetal-maternal hemorrhage. If a large bleed is identfied with the fetal screen test, the volume of the bleed is quantified by performing a Kleihauer Betke stain. Based on the volume of the bleed, a calculation is used to determine the number of vials of Rhogam required to prevent Rh sensitization of the patient.
Ordering Recommendations
Different order sets are used at EDW to order Rhogam product and associated testing. In addition, a Rh Immune Globulin injection (medication order) is placed to allow for documentation of the lot number and expiration date of product administered. L&D uses "Rhogam Screen" to place Rhogam test and product orders. When ready to administer Rhogam, L&D orders " Rh immune Globulin Injection". The ED uses the "ED Rhogam Panel" to order both product and the RHIG Injection order. OR and Same Day Surgery use "EDW OR Rhogam Panel" which is set up in the same manner as "ED Rhogam Panel".
