Specimen Handling

Females and Males: Collect a vaginal or urethral specimen using an appropriately sized synthetic swab. Place swab in viral transport media (VTM). Refrigerate and ship to the laboratory at 2-8 degrees C. . Semen/Urine/Biopsy/Tissue/CSF:Collect specimen in a sterile, leakproof container. Refrigerate and ship to the laboratory at 2-8 degrees C.

Unacceptable Conditions

Bacterial swab specimen; specimen received in grossly leaking transport container; dry specimen; specimen submitted in fixative or additive; specimen received in expired transport media or incorrect transport device; specimen received in M4 RT VTM; inappropriate specimen transport conditions; specimen received after prolonged delay in transport (usually >72 hours); specimen stored or transported at room temperature; wooden shaft swab in transport device; calcium alginate swabs; unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label.

Temperature
