Additional Information
Interpretive Information: The amount of antibody detected is measured by Fluoroenzymeimmunoassay (Phadia) does not directly correlate to a specific immunofluorescence titer. Results of 7 to 10 U/mL are considered equivocal and will flag abnormal with recommendation to retest the patient after 8 to 12 weeks.
Clinical Significance: Smith (Sm) is 1 of 4 autoantigens commonly referred to as extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs). The other ENAs are Ribonucleic Protein (RNP), Sjogren's A (SS-A/Ro), and Sjogren's B (SS-B/La). Antibodies to ENAs are common in patients with connective tissue diseases including Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD), Sjogren's Syndrome, Scleroderma, and polymyositis/dermatomyositis.
