Additional Information
Clinical Significance: Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a member of the herpesvirus family and a common human pathogen, infecting approximately 80 to 90% of the population. Although primary infection with EBV during early childhood is usually asymptomatic, nearly 1/2 to 2/3 of primary infection in late adolescence and young adults results in overt clinical disease such as infectious mononucleosis (IM), an acute self-limiting lymphoproliferative disease. EBV infection results in the production of antibodies to four different antigenic complexes: Nuclear Antigen, Viral Capsid Antigen, Early Antigen, and Membrane Antigen. While measurement of specific antibody levels may not be indicative of disease state, tracking of the antibody response profile may be of diagnostic significance as characteristic patterns are seen in acute, silent primary, or persistent latent EBV infections.
Interpretive Information: The magnitude of the measured result, above the cutoff, is not indicative of the amount of antibody present.
